The Durham People’s Alliance uses grassroots organizing as a citizen watchdog group. We’re always fighting for a more progressive vision of our city.
PA is organized to encourage participation and democratic decision-making. All major issue and policy decisions, as well as our PAC electoral recommendations, are made by the full membership meetings. PA membership elects a Coordinating Committee of 10-16 members that provides leadership and makes decisions between meetings.
We also have issue committees that vary depending on issue prominence and volunteer leadership. We encourage members to lead organizing efforts directed at new issues. All committees are open to all members. Our part-time staff person maintains membership records, runs the office and coordinates volunteers.
We work to elect progressive people to office, but believe in citizen action 365 days a year.
We do this by:
- Sponsoring public forums to educate citizens about critical community issues.
- Taking positions at public hearings and in letters to elected officials.
- Building coalitions with other grassroots organizations through planning joint campaigns.
- Co-sponsoring conferences with others to build trust and positive working relationships with other community groups.
